What Is Tooth Uncovering?
Tooth uncovering, also known as exposure of impacted teeth, is a surgical procedure used to help guide a tooth into its proper position when it has failed to erupt naturally. This procedure is most commonly performed on impacted canine teeth, but it may also be used for other teeth that remain trapped beneath the gums or bone.
An impacted tooth can occur when there is not enough room in the mouth, when surrounding teeth block eruption, or when the tooth develops in an abnormal position. Left untreated, impacted teeth can affect alignment, bite function, and long-term oral health.
Why Is Tooth Uncovering Needed?

The Tooth Uncovering Procedure
During the procedure, the oral surgeon carefully exposes the impacted tooth by removing a small amount of gum tissue and, when necessary, bone covering the tooth. In many cases, a small orthodontic bracket and chain are attached to the tooth so the orthodontist can gradually guide it into place over time.
Depending on the complexity of the case, treatment may be performed using local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia for maximum comfort and safety.
What to Expect After Surgery
Most patients experience mild swelling, tenderness, and minor discomfort following treatment. These symptoms are typically temporary and can be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter medications, ice packs, and proper post-operative care.
